Hailstorms and Fiery Darts

It was like something out of a movie. I’ll never forget the roaring sound of the hail hitting the house. The damage took weeks to repair.

Not too long ago our house was hit with a hail storm. Not a little bit of hail at the end of a storm but an all-out storm. The ice balls started out tiny and in seconds grew to the size of golf balls. When it started, it didn’t quit. It kept coming; pounding the roof and the windows and my poor car sitting in the driveway. {Why didn’t I put my car in the garage??} The sound of the hail hitting the house grew louder and louder. It was deafening.

At first, I thought, “It will quit in a minute. Just wait.”

The hail did not stop. It got worse. As the intensity increased so did my anxiety. I ran around in circles screaming at my husband, “Make it stop. Make it stop.” {Not a pretty picture!} Of course, my husband could not stop it, all we could do was watch it happen.

A long ten minutes later, the damage was done. I tiptoed outside wading through four inches of ice to survey the yard and cars. The budding trees and rose bushes were decimated, stripped of leaves and blooms. Limbs and twigs covered the sidewalk and lawn furniture.

The car suffered the most damage. It looked as if there had been a water buffalo dance party on the hood and roof. We found out later that further down the road, south of our house, the damage was worse. Softball size hail hit those homes. The damage was indescribable. One minute it was there, and in an instant, it was gone leaving broken windows and dented cars.

Looking at the roof of my car I imagined the dents felt like my heart feels sometimes. Dinged, dented and defeated. The result of being hit over and over with the lies tossed at me by the enemy. And like the hail, I feel like I can’t stop it.

You can’t do that.

You don’t look right.

You are not good enough or pretty enough.

You always say the wrong thing.

I could go on and on, and maybe you have a similar list. The arrows {or hail} fly and hit the mark every time. Without the proper protection, they can do a lot of damage. Maybe your heart has taken a beating, too.

To recover from the storm, we had to call in experts, first the insurance company, then a roofer and a car collision company. We couldn’t fix it no matter how much we wanted to. We did not have the tools.

To mend our dented hearts, we have to call in an expert, and that is Jesus. Without faith and trust in His love, we live unprotected from the lies of the enemy. They go straight to our hearts, and in no time we begin to believe what he tells us.

To protect ourselves, we need the whole armor of God. In Ephesians 6, Paul describes each piece and implores us to “Put on the full armor…” The specific pieces protect vital parts of our spiritual body. For instance, the breastplate covers our heart, the sandals of peace protect our spiritual walk with peace that comes from the gospel, and the belt of truth holds the whole armor to together and help us stand firm. With all of these, Paul tells us to add the shield of faith which protects us from the fiery darts of the enemy.

The shield of Paul’s day was large and made of wood covered in sturdy leather. It could defend a soldier from anything the enemy could throw at him, even fiery arrows. It is our faith, our trust in God that can protect us from the enemy’s arrows and the lies he uses to harm us.

Do you believe that you are loved by the Father? Do you know that you are His masterpiece? Do you trust that He knows everything about you, yet He cannot turn away from you? These truths are what your shield of faith is made of and what protects you from the lies.

The truth is…

You are loved deeply by the One True God.

You are made by the Creator.

You are His masterpiece.

You are perfect in every way.

Hold up that shield.

Show the enemy that you will not be damaged, dented or defeated by his lies because you know the truth about who you are. You are a beloved daughter of God.

Father, we are your daughters and sons. Thank you that no matter what the world says we are, You say otherwise. Thank you for your love, your strength and protection against the lies of the enemy. Write your love on our hearts.
